I am a speaker who just wants to get on stage and ‘do my thing’; and of course I would like to be successful, but I’m confused by all of different services being offered out there. What is the difference between having an agent, belonging to a speaker bureau or just having a PR firm? A. Agents, Speaker Bureaus and PR Firms offer a lot of great services that can be valuable to up and coming speakers depending on what you need. An AGENT, works for the best interests of the speaker. They have an incentive to get you as high a fee as possible because the more for you, the more for them. An agent works to get you more money and better treatment, to speak on your behalf when it’s uncomfortable for you to ask for what you deserve or get better terms than you have been offered. An agent loves to handle what speakers prefer to avoid. A BUREAU works for the interests of the hiring organization. While a bureau does get a percentage of a contract, the bureau wants to keep its client happy by keeping costs in line with its budget. The client, if happy, will return to the bureau to hire many more speakers – not necessarily you – in the future. Agents and bureaus passively list speakers on their websites and brochures. They may actively promote their firm, but they do not actively market/promote individual speakers. (Read that last sentence again.) A PUBLICIST ultimately makes their clients so visible and credible that speakers don’t have to go “knocking on doors” for work. Publicists and PR firms get paid upfront for their services…that is, they do not work on commission. However, publicists don’t actively develop your brand, content, products, event syntax, etc. You are on your own for that. They haven’t the experience nor the patience to deal with speakers without established content. Q. So is GeTogether an Agency, a Speaker Bureau or a PR firm? A. We are effectively the best of all three. GeTogether will act as your Personal Marketing Consultant. Where agencies, bureaus and PR firms won’t actively SEEK speaking engagements for speakers, GeTogether will, as well as help you create, develop, market, promote and produce your products and events to build the necessary exposure for your success. Like an agent, we will work in your best interest and will utilize our years of experience in contract negotiation to get you the best possible value for your time. Like a bureau, we look to continually grow our speaker base, so that exposure for all speakers will grow exponentially as our speaker base grows. Like a PR firm, we will also take charge of actively promoting and marketing your brand and your specific message/service. Unlike all three, we will be personally invested in making you a success! Q. We’ve now got an idea of where you are presently; now let’s find out where you’d like to go! We’ll start by analyzing your “wants” and develop them in to specific goals and outcomes with regard to your speaking career. Many questions are in depth and we ask you to set aside at least 20 – 30 minutes in which to answer them as completely as possible. What’s great about this process is that it will not only better prepare us to support you to the fullest, but it will help you better pinpoint exactly what you’d like to do…and it’s absolutely free! 3. Phase One – Development and Exposure. With your questionnaire completed, we’ll then lay out our suggested Personal Marketing Plan. No two plans are alike as each plan is created especially for each of our client’s needs. Your plan will contain a step by step timeline for achieving specific and measurable goals in the first phase of your promotion. This may entail developing product or content over a longer period of time for newer speakers, or jumping right in to targeting specific regional markets to promote a larger event for more established speakers. Once we’ve fine-tuned this plan and agreed on the length of the Phase One cycle and corresponding outcomes, we will go to work immediately upon receiving a retainer for our services. There is a chance that our preliminary discussions and examination of your needs could reveal that GeTogether’s services may not offer the best support for you. If that is the case, we will be happy to suggest other resources from our wide range of contacts. 4. Phase Two – Continued Trust and Support. We are most interested in building long term relationships by gaining your trust and confidence. We will review the results of our Phase One journey and revisit and analyze the goals we set together. Our aim in mutually agreeing on specific outcomes before any agreement is to make it easy for everyone to celebrate the successes along the way. Phase Two will consist of developing a tailor made agreement for continued support.
